What is special about the food of the Saimaa region?
Why do foreign guests praise our food? Can we ourselves appreciate high-quality, locally-sourced food?
Finland's best expert on food origin labelling, Marjo Särkkä from the Ruralia Institute in Mikkeli, will be our guest. Marjo explains the importance of identifying and appreciating the quality of food in the Saimaa region for consumers and producers. The sandwich cake master is Veera Riikonen.
Marjo Särkkä works at the Ruralia Institute of the University of Helsinki in Mikkeli and is a passionate food researcher. She is particularly interested in how food can tell stories – where it comes from, why it is trusted and how locality is reflected in flavours. Marjo promotes, among other things, the recognition of protected products, such as Karelian pies, Puruvesi vendace, and Finnish wild blueberries, and how they can strengthen the brand and food culture of the regions. She knows how to talk about food in a way that science and everyday life meet. The topic and presentation of the Saimaa Flavors Day are products marked with the D.O. Saimaa designation of origin. Marjo is an expert on the label – she knows almost all D.O. Saimaa products and producers. He explains how the superior quality products of the Saimaa region are created and why they deserve special attention both on the dining table and in the development of the region.
An interesting and approachable story about the reputation, meanings and possibilities of food is promised!

The cakes are made with local delicacies: cold-smoked pike from Kerimäki fish fillet, smoked rainbow trout roe from Puruvesi, pasture-raised meat from Paajanen, spelt from Janhula farm and domestic vegetables – something for everyone!
