The Matinmäki drumlin shield

Website

The Matinmäki drumlin shield has been declared a nationally valuable moraine formation and it is part of the Pieksämäki drumlin field, which contains thousands of ridges. The field extends from Central Finland to South Savo, forming a fan which depicts the direction of movement of the Finnish Lake District ice lobe. The direction of the drumlins and grooves in rocks indicate that the ice arrived from an angle of 335o-340o. Typically to the area, the rock is cordierite, garnet and sillimanite mica gneiss, featuring granite veins and dikes.
