The Juva area is part of the expansive Pieksämäki drumlin field which formed during the last ice age. The powerful flow of the continental ice sheet in the area caused the materials at the bottom of the glacier to layer in smooth ridges, or drumlins. The orientation of the drumlins depicts the direction of the glacier’s movement.
