Vuoksenniska is part of the First Salpausselkä, where the Vuoksi outlet channel broke through 5,700 years ago as a result of the Greater Saimaa flood. In the Imatra region, the First Salpausselkä is between 1-2 kilometres wide due to the long deposition time of 200 years, during which time the ice edge also had time to move.
